Turner nominated Angela de la Cruz pushes the physical boundaries of painting. De la Cruz's pieces are almost physically violated by her as they have had their stretchers attacked, canvases ripped and then contorted, and yet they are often darkly humorous. The apparent aggressive assault on her paintings can be seen in light of her refusal to conform to the confines of the traditional canvas. De la Cruz's works also have a cathartic element to them, as if the act of damaging the structure of the painting gives her a release. These meditative acts of aggression carries through to her prints.
Recent solo exhibitions include: Delimitations, Herzliya, Tel Aviv; Transfer, Lisson Gallery, London; Helga de Alvear, Madrid.
